Why New Producers Interview Well, Then Quit When You Start Paying Them

“If producers are not resilient, you'll find them hiding under their desk, on the golf course, at the coffee shop at the sports bar or at home on the couch eating twinkies. That means they are not out prospecting and selling, which means they are not growing a book.” – Randy Schwantz

Why do New Producers Interview Well, Then Quit When You Start Paying Them?

It’s a two-fold problem.

The first problem is this, there is a good chance that you don’t ask deeply penetrating questions. Yes, you ask questions, but you don’t drill deep enough to find the real truth (by the way, if you do, it will show in your results).

The second problem is this: candidates have learned how to answer questions much like politicians… here is an example:

Reporter: Mr. Politician, what are you going to do about the dam that is about to break? If it does, it will cause a huge flood, a lot of property damage and perhaps even a loss of life?

Politician: Well, Madam Reporter, we’re going to do everything we can do within our power to help alleviate this problem. We love the people here in our district, they are good tax paying Americans and we’ll do all we can.

As you read this you’ll notice the politician said nothing, which is exactly what most producer candidates do.
